Sermon Series – A Significant Life (Part 3)
Discipleship calls us to be IN community – in our families, work, church, and lives. What distracts us from community? What does it cost us to be in community? What does it cost us NOT to be in community?
Sermon Questions
Q: Have you ever experienced the unity that Jesus talks about? (Can you describe that experience a bit?)
Q: Has disobedience cost you unity? (How might your obedience to Christ have helped resolved that situation?)
Q: Have you experienced the fellowship that comes from obedience? (Can you describe that?)
Q: Are there ways that we as Christians could make obedience for our brothers and sisters easier? What would this look like?
Additional Verses
1 Peter 1:22 “You have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart.”
1 John 2:5 “But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.”
Hebrews 5:8–9 (NIV) 8 Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered 9 and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him
1 John 2:15–17 (NIV) 15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its
desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.
1 John 2:3–6 (NIV) 3 We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.
John 14:15-17a *Jesus’ Words 15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth.
John 14:21 (NIV) 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”
John 14:23 (NIV)
23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.
John 15:8–11 (NIV) 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. 9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.
